Family Date Nights

September 30, 2012

Andrew and I have started family date nights. We do this about every other Friday and then Andrew and I go out the other weekends by ourselves. For family nights we pick someplace cheap to go, we spend about $10 for the whole evening. The first time we went out we went to Freddy’s which is a fast food place where we got buy one get one free meals. Then we went to Target to buy baby wipes and got a free redbox (thank you pinterest codes!) and cookie dough from Papa Murphy’s. This week we had a free birthday pasta bowl at Noodles and Co. We went to dinner and then to kohls to use a $10 coupon. So our whole evening cost us $9 including the kohls purchase. I know, it sounds super exciting! The point is we get ready and we go out as a family. We are setting aside intentional time to spend together and our hope is to do this as our kids grow up. It’s also fun for me to get a little dressed up and dress up Ellery to go out. I really don’t care if I’m overdressed, I’m dressing up for my husband and people can stare if they must. The other amazing thing about date nights, NO DISHES!!! When Ellery actually eats our date nights will change to go wherever kids eat free. If you don’t already do so I encourage you to go on dates, alone and as a family. You won’t regret it.

The Quest for Thin

September 27, 2012

I’ve been on a quest, my whole life really, the quest for thin. And why? What is it about thin that makes someone better? Why has it been so important to me? In my mind thin equals happiness and in my mind I have never once been thin. Smaller, yes, thin, no. Not that I’ve never been happy, but to me there is something about thin that seems magical. Like thin gives you the wardrobe you want, the job you want, and the list goes on and on.

Now I’m a mama, I have the body to prove it and the quest no longer seems as important. I was back at my pre-pregnancy weight two weeks postpartum, but somehow half of my pants no longer button and my dream to some day be a size six is slowly diminishing.

Pinterest, what a cool invention, and believe me I am a frequent pinner and I’ve used this site to decorate, cook, get advice, etc. I just wish there was a filter so I could block out all the images of the thin women with abs of steel and perfect perky boobs, I mean come on! Sure they are attached to work outs and I’d be lying if I said I’ve never pinned one, but what average person really has time to look like that? The reality is they are doing A LOT more than the 20 minute a day workout they are attached to. In the words of Sweet Brown,”ain’t no body got time for that!”

So I’m embarking on a new quest, the quest for healthy. I am far from it, I’ve never craved sugar so badly in my lifetime, but I have to start somewhere and right now that somewhere is walking. Everyday at least once, and sometimes twice a day and dusting off my sport hula hoop to try and do something with this new tummy.

What about happiness? I’m realizing thin isn’t the answer, I have the husband I want, the job I want and someday I may have the wardrobe I want, but that’s really not all that important. I have a daughter! It’s time to embrace my body and love myself so she will someday love herself too!!

The Realization

September 26, 2012

While my BFF Steph was here I had this realization. Never in my lifetime can I ever have another friend like her. It hit me on her last day as she snuggled Elle for her last nap of the visit. Stephanie and I have shared almost our whole lives together. We weren’t quite babes when we met, but we were 8 years old and I barely remember life without her. Sure I will have other great friends over my lifetime and I do, but to have a friend like her that is once in a lifetime. Stephanie reminded me that some people never have this and for that I am sad for others and grateful for us. It’s just hard to live 1,000 miles away from the one girlfriend I don’t have to explain things to or can vent to without excuse. I miss her so much, but I’m so grateful that no matter what she will always be there. And thank goodness for FaceTime!!

Dot Canvas

September 24, 2012

Joining Emily for Pinned it Did it Monday again.  I had one last week, but my friend Stephanie was in town so I didn’t get any blogging done.

Here was the original pin:

You can find the original link HERE

Here is my version: biggest advice, get a larger circle punch!!  I used a one inch and it took FOREVER!!  I mod podged the circles on and then covered the whole thing with it as well.  I am making four of these for over my bath tub…not even close to done with them!  The project is going to cost me around $10 for all four because I had to buy the punch and the glue, I had the canvases already, but was tired of the way they looked.  If I counted my time they would be very expensive though 🙂

2 Month Letter

September 21, 2012

My Dearest Ellery Wynn,

I wiped your first tears this month. I’m sure it was the first of many I will wipe over your lifetime. I hope we can share more tears of joy than tears of sadness, but life is unpredictable and there are no guarantees on that. I experienced my first feelings of mommy guilt this month and it is absolutely awful. Your baby monitor died in the night and I worry that you were crying and I didn’t hear you. When I woke up the next morning you were a happy baby and daddy assures me you are just fine, I hope this didn’t scar you! I also experienced my first mommy pride moment when you turned your head for the first time during tummy time around 5 weeks. You are sleeping through the night according to the books, a 5 hour stretch consistently and sometimes you go 7! You started this around 6 weeks and it is really nice to only get up once in the night, typically around 4:00AM. You moved to your crib at 5 weeks and the first night you didn’t go to sleep until 6AM, we were worried you wouldn’t like sleeping in your crib, but the next night you slept like a champ. You hate reading books, it’s actually quite comical because you’ll be totally happy until I open the cover and then you start screaming. I really hope this changes! You love music and I try to play the piano and sing to you often. Your “magic song” that calms you down every time is daughters by John Mayer. You are such a delight! Aunt Stephanie came for a visit, she said I make motherhood look easy, you my sweet girl make it easy. I love being your mama.

Love you forever!

September 14, 2012

I found one of these on Elle’s head Monday morning.  If you google this you will find that it’s no big deal, it’ll take care of itself, but we didn’t know what it was until Wednesday.  I found a mushy lump the size of a half dollar on the back of my 7 week old baby’s head.  Did not make for a good 48 hours!  I took her to the Doctor on Tuesday morning and she said, well I’ve only seen something like this one other time.  This is not a phrase you EVER want a Doctor to say to you.  So she ordered an ultrasound.  You can imagine what it was like holding this little lady while they ultrasound her head right at 10:00 when she always wants to eat.  It was interesting, but I got through it.  The radiologist said it was a cephalhematoma, but our pediatrician had never seen one show up 7 weeks later so she called for a neurosurgeon consult.  Surprisingly I slept that night, truly must have been the peace of God because when you find out a neurosurgeon has been called to look at an ultrasound of your baby’s head/brain, it doesn’t make you feel good. Luckily on Wednesday we found out the neurosurgeon confirmed what the radiologist thought and we all breathed a big sigh of relief!

Of course all of this was happening during the craziest week of Andrew’s job ever!  His job has been all kinds of crazy with technical difficulties which would very directly affect us if not resolved so we’ve been praying a lot about that and trying not to worry.  Needless to say Friday couldn’t come fast enough!

As much as I love the weekends and never want them to rush by I am hoping this one goes kind of fast, at least for me.  Steph my BFF arrives late morning on Sunday and I can’t wait for her to meet Ellery!

It’s an absolutely beautiful Friday here.  And by beautiful I mean gloomy and rainy, the perfect day to stay inside, clean, blog, laundry, meal plan, craft and snuggle our little nugget!

Clothespin Wreath

September 10, 2012

Emily motivated me again this week to accomplish something off my pin boards.  I decided to spruce up my laundry room last weekend and made this little project to put in it.  Here is the original picture:

Not exactly sure what she used to make this because the link wouldn’t give me a tutorial so I made up my own.  I used a coat hanger that I bent into a circle and a soda tab as the hanger and then I just glued on the clothespins.  Alternating every other one clipped and glued onto the hanger.  This would work much better if you actually had a circle because it would turn out nicer like hers, but for a whopping $1 for the clothespins I thought it turned out pretty cute.  Here is mine:

The flower I had lying around the house and it was a necessity because when you get to the end the pins aren’t spaced exactly perfect so it covers up the blemishes.  Hopefully I’ll finish a couple other things this week in the laundry so I can show you the full redo next week.

The Power of Submittance

September 7, 2012

Oh women, it’s our job to sumbit, say what? How is that fair? We are liberated women right? Have you ever been to a wedding and heard the traditional sermon about husbands love your wives as Christ loves the church and wives submit to your husbands? I’m guessing most of you have and I’m also sticking my neck out and guessing that there are a few of you who have felt that the women get the raw end of the deal here. I’m sorry, but men have a tough job here, they are to love their wives as Christ loves the church…He died for the Church people! If you want to begin to understand Christ’s love for the church and how that plays out in a relationship read the book of Hosea, God calls Hosea to demonstrate that kind of love and it’s incredible. If you want to read the book in novel form Francine River does a phenomenal job in her book Redeeming Love.

In small group last week we were talking about these verses and we read this verse in reference to wives submitting to their husbands:

3 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 1 Peter 3:1-2

Those are stinking empowering verses ladies! The way I see it submitting empowers us, by submitting to our husband we have the power to change them, to win them over to Christ if they are not believers. That is some powerful stuff.

If I may offer this one piece of advice: marry a Godly man, you deserve to be loved like that and if you aren’t married or are married to an unbeliever know that Christ’s love for you is absolutely amazing and unconditional whether you love him back or not. So next time you hear this verse know that neither of us are getting a bad deal, both sides have their perks!

That’s what I like about Texas??? That is the commercial down here. Every Dairy Queen commercial ends with the phrase “DQ, that’s what I like about Texas.”. They serve tacos at the DQs down here too! It’s funny that Texans think Dairy Queen is only in Texas and it shocks them to find out they are everywhere and no one really eats at them. Also, did you know Austin is the capital of the CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE?? Haha yeah, you gotta love Texans!!

Burlap Monogram

September 3, 2012

I’ve been actually accomplishing some pinterest items due to this series by Emily!  Nothing too incredible yet, but I’m slowly chipping away at my DIY board!

Here was the picture I pinned:

And here is mine, MUCH worse picture!

Total cost $2.89 for the embroidery hoop.  I already had the burlap, paint and paint brush.  I didn’t want to buy a stencil so I just printed a C from the printer and taped it to the underside of the burlap.  I have a couple more things I want to do to this wall before it’s complete, but I’m slowly getting there!
