Pieces of Home

March 29, 2011

Jenna just left, in fact in about 20 minutes she’ll be boarding a plane and going back to the cold.  I fought the tears on the drive home it’s so hard when a piece of home leaves.  The trip was great, it was so nice to have life feel pretty normal again.  It was great to have deep conversations, theological discussions, laughing, lounging, lots of Brothers and sisters and the fun goes on!  She definitely got to feel the heat of Texas, it was in the nineties on Saturday for Hudson’s birthday party.  The party turned out BEAUTIFUL!  I can’t wait to share some pictures, Amanda did a fabulous job planning and creating.

My parents are here and I’m looking forward to having some quality family time over the next week or so.  It’ll probably be a bit of a double whammy when they leave, but at least I’ll be starting my job and this place will start feeling even more like home.  We love it here, truly do, but we still really miss our people at home.  We’re trying to figure out any possible way to get back to the CU sometime this year to hug on some peeps, eat at our favorite local places and spend a few nights at my parents house….I kinda miss that place the most.  Our house is open for more visitors, especially those of you who are thinking about moving here 🙂  I love having pieces of home here even when it means I have to let them go at the end of the visit.

OOPS: totally forgot to post this yesterday!!

Future Absence Excuse

March 22, 2011

Just wanted to give you a heads up that I’ll be most likely missing for the next week or so due to some visitors. Jenna will be here tomorrow and we’ll be busy dining on the lake, going to the rodeo, shopping south congress, partying with the family for H’s 2nd birthday, family pictures, Moonie’s burgers, listening to music at Mozart’s and the list goes on.  My parents will arrive this weekend for the party and we’ll be busy hanging out.  I’ve been anxiously awaiting this week and I can’t wait to tell you all about it next week! I’m insanely excited, I’ll try to get some pictures, you know how terrible I am with that!

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

March 20, 2011

Yeah I know this is an incredible title, but I thought I’d give a quick little synopsis of our weekend.  This is a going to sound like the most boring weekend ever, but Andrew and I really felt relaxed and felt like we accomplished a lot.  So here is a short little wrap up.

Friday:  Andrew got home from work and we made pizza and salad for dinner.  We went to Home Depot and Target to pick up a few odds and ends and then spent the next couple hours installing all the drawer pulls on our kitchen doors and drawers.  What appeared to be a quick project turned somewhat frustrating because each time we measured the drawer pulls and drilled they were the wrong size everytime.  We finally got the hang of it by the last drawer and that one took all of 3 minutes.  Needless to say we finished them!

Saturday:  Andrew started tutoring and he had an appointment Saturday morning down the street from Bryan and Amanda’s.  Hudson had a play date at the same time so I got to attend this little shindig.  I love living that close to this little boy.  I got to hang with him for an hour and then Andrew and I came home to work on the house again.  We worked on the kitchen, built a bookshelf, put up curtains in the office and worked on unpacking more of our boxes.  Tomorrow is recycling day so I like to get as many boxes broken down and outside as I can.  It turns out that every week we have way more recycling than trash.  I love that our neighborhood has curbside recycling.

Sunday:  We went to church this morning then stayed after for potluck Sunday.  We then headed over to Bryan’s to help him paint all day and then had Mangieri’s (similar, but not as good as Jupiter’s) for dinner.  We came home and felt totally uninspired to work on the house.  We got pumped up enough to do a few things and organized Andrew’s closet.  Mine is not built yet, otherwise I definitely would have done mine as well.

It has been GORGEOUS here all weekend.  The sun has been out, there has been a nice breeze, and the temperatures have hovered in the high 70s/ low 80s.  We have taken some walks and enjoyed the outdoors as much as possible.  This coming week is going to get a little toasty, Friday it’s supposed to get to 90, trying to hold out as long as possible on turning the air on.  Bryan says that if we wait until it’s REALLY hot to turn it on our bodies will acclimate better to the heat.  I’m going to go purchase another fan tomorrow!

Hudson is as sweet as ever.  His latest few things:  telling people on t.v. and in books that what they did was “not nice” and then telling them ” time out”  it’s so funny.  They taught him how to smile on command today and it is the cheesiest little thing!  He climbed up on Andrew today grabbed his face and kept kissing it…such a sweet sight.  Instead of saying What happened he just says “HAPPENED?” in a very loud quizzically voice.  If I could figure out how to imbed videos I would show you a video of him being very concerned about what happened to Rosie on the Thomas video.  I love this little boy SO MUCH, I can’t even imagine what it feels like to love your own child!  The other thing he does well now is correctly responding yes or no according to what he wants…definitely makes life easier for everyone, it used to be either no or silence when you asked him a question.  When he says yes he says it with a lot of authority like its a totally legit response.  I can’t believe he’ll be 2 in just a couple weeks, I’m really looking forward to his birthday party…Jenna is taking pictures so you know I’ll be posting them!!

Well I never knew this much could happen in 24 hours, but I’ll pack it in for you.  Let’s just say we have had an absolutely fantastic 24 hours and has made Austin feel much more like home.

1.  I got an INCREDIBLE job.  The mother and I chatted today and both said that we felt like God put us together.  I’ll be the nanny of a 6 month old little boy and my schedule will be 8:30-5ish Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This means 4 day weekends to work on the house, clean, cook, grocery shop, etc.  I get to be a “stay at home wife” and bring home a nice amount of money each week.  Also through the site she found me I am able to pick up some extra shifts with other families.  I think I found the perfect fit for me.  I start the day my parents go back to Champaign so the timing is impeccable.

2.  I got approved for my health insurance today, see yesterdays post to see what was holding the whole process up.  I’m so relieved that it’s set up and I feel at ease with that security.

3.  Andrew got the stamp of approval from his former boss, the papers are signed and he is now officially done, the last 9 years are finally wrapped up!

4.  Andrew had a great chat with his current boss about growth potential and it was very encouraging.  He’s in the right place at the right time and he’s very happy to be there.

5.  I talked to the worship pastor from church today and he put me on the worship schedule in April.  This is something I miss SO MUCH and I’m looking forward to getting back into it.

Things are really good down here…now if only the house would finish itself.  I’m officially tired of painting!

Well I never thought I would type these words.  I am a rules follower or rather I’m a rules maker so that I can follow them.  If a rule doesn’t exist for something, if there aren’t finite boundaries I don’t feel safe or comfortable so I make up rules.  If there isn’t a dress code for something I make one up.  I have made up fashion rules, shopping rules, spending rules, etc.  I know they are made up and I don’t try to impose any of these on other people, well sometimes I might TRY to impose them on Andrew.  One rule that I made up when I got married was no babies after 3o.  For some reason I just decided that I didn’t want to be pregnant after 30.  Well when I turned 25 and was in no mood to have a baby while moving to Austin, buying a house, and looking for jobs I had to have some serious introspection time.  I realized one day that Andrew was beginning to panic.  Not outwardly panicking, but I could see that he would get a little agitated when we would talk about our life timelines.  I was hanging out with God one day and I felt like he said, “Laura, you need to tell your husband that you are not going to be strict on your no babies after 30 rule.”  So I told him that and our conversations became much more calm.

This week I had a hysterical pregnancy…you know where you convince yourself that you are pregnant because things aren’t exactly on schedule. (sorry for the TMI)  I layed wide awake in bed last night for about an hour explaining to God all the reasons why I am not ready for a baby right now.  That’s when it was really confirmed for me that I just am not ready for this next phase of life.  I love being married to Andrew too much, I love our freedom, our time together, creating a home, getting involved in church stuff, and I’m not ready to share my love and time with a sweet little human being.  Someday I’ll be ready, I know that at my core is a momma.  I’ve always wanted to be a mom, I love to be around kids, but right now I’m super content to snuggle with a sweet little blondie that’s about to turn 2.  So I just want to state for the record that I MIGHT have to break my 30 rule…I mean I am still young and I have time to fulfill my wish, but if I don’t I won’t be crushed.

I remind myself that I’ve NEVER in my life talked to someone that has said, “man I wish I had had kids sooner.”

Perhaps my 25th year of life will be full of broken rules, I’ll keep you updated!

Some Random Updates

March 14, 2011

I finished all the Bones seasons that they offer on Netflix.  So now I’ll have to catch up on the internet and then maybe even catch some episodes in “real time.”

Well now I have to watch something else on netflix and Jenna suggested Brothers and Sisters and now I’m already 7 episodes in and I’m pretty hooked.

Andrew and I watched Music and Lyrics tonight and we laughed a lot.  I’m pretty sure we will be singing Pop goes my heart for the next week.  It was a pretty cute movie, I think my mom didn’t like it and so I went in thinking I wouldn’t like it, but it turned out to be entertaining.

We are getting our new appliances tomorrow!  They’re refurbished, but a steal of a deal and will go fabulously in our kitchen and laundry room.  The refrigerator is one of the last things to complete the kitchen before I can take the final pictures and post them!!

I talked to the mother of the child I would LOVE to nanny for today and she said she is just waiting on talking to a couple of my references and then it sounds like they are thinking they will hire me.  This is EXACTLY what I want to do and this is the sweetest little family, I would love to be a part of it!

We finally got our car registered in Texas…it took me a really long time, but I’ve got the one car done.  Still have to work on getting the Honda registered and that will be SLIGHTLY more complicated, something to do with the registration already being expired, and the title not being in my exact name, you know small little things.

Wednesday we are going to Buca di Beppo!!  This is my favorite Italian chain and we’re going with FRIENDS…yep this is the first outing with new friends, it should be fun.

Last night Kevin and his roommate Mike came over for dinner and we ate and played games.  It was a lot of fun.  It felt good to casually have people over, that’s something I miss a lot from Champaign.

Loving

March 12, 2011

So we’ve been in our house for two weeks now and here are some things I’m loving about our humble abode.  Some of these are Andrew’s likes as well.

1.  Our dishwasher.  Haven’t ever lived somewhere (besides with family) that has had one of these!  My kitchen feels so clean all the time and my dishes feel much more sanitary.

2.  Two bathrooms.  Andrew and I no longer race each other when we pull in the driveway.

3.  Our GIGANTIC master bathroom.  Seriously so much bigger than it needs to be, but it’s nice to have 2 closets, 2 sinks, and a separate toilet room.  I’m in love with this space.

4.  The piano.  Yeah this isn’t technically part of the house, but there is room for a piano here and I sit down at least every other day to play for a while and boy did I miss having a piano in my living space.

5.  The pantry. This will shock some of you…I’ve actually bought multiple cans of vegetables and multiple boxes of cereal so I don’t run out as quickly.  I can actually fit them in my pantry so I feel like it’s ok to have more than we need for one meal.

I know what you’re thinking…WHERE ARE THE PICTURES????  Soon friends, very soon.  I want to wait until Jenna gets here and then I’ll have some beautiful pictures to share with you!  I promise before April I’ll post a lot more pictures!

Insanity:

March 10, 2011

Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.  That’s where I’m at right now.  Each day I try to get the car registered and each day for some reason I actually think it’s going to get registered.  The issue is that tomorrow will be attempt #4.  I’m getting a little sick of this little chore, but I’m glad that I have the time to do this because if Andrew had to take work off to do this he would be out of vacation time by now.  The first attempt led me to the Texas Office of Transportation.  It was a 40 minute drive each way and when I arrived they informed me that I was at the wrong office and that I would need to go to the tax office.  Luckily they were really nice and explained to me where I needed to go.  Second attempt was at the tax office.  When I got up to the desk they informed me that Andrew had to sign the paperwork because his name was on the title…lovely.  So I brought the paperwork home and Andrew filled it out.  Third attempt: today: I went back to the tax office with everything I need and when I pulled up there was a sign outside that read, “office closed for training, reopened tomorrow.”  You have GOT to be KIDDING ME!!!  So hopefully fourth time is a charm or I may become certifiably insane.

Big Lots

March 9, 2011

So as gas prices climb I’ve been looking for REALLY easy ways to save some money.  I don’t understand couponing.  I mean I can take coupons that I find to the store and save some money, however, I cannot understand how to get free things or get paid to buy things, etc.  I am impressed with people who can do this, but I’m not there yet.  I do love Big Lots though.  Yesterday I had to go to the tax office which happens to be next to Big Lots so I went in with my grocery list and picked up some things.  I can’t believe how inexpensive my shopping trip was.  Now I will say I got my Cheez-Its for free because he thought he wrung them up, but when I got home I checked and he didn’t.  Not my fault and not going back to pay for them considering I’m trying to save on gas!!  All in all my total was $11.90 and I got everything pictured below.  Yes I know the food I got is not super healthy, but this is pretty much the only bad stuff I buy and then at the grocery store I buy all my produce, meat and dairy…don’t judge!

FYI the generic fruity pebbles are SO MUCH better than the real ones. They have a new Gluten Free formula and it's not very tasty.

I Love My Life

March 8, 2011

So today while I was shopping looking for house items I thought to myself, ” I could really get used to this.”  At first I really didn’t like being home all day.  I wanted a job SO BAD, I was bored out of my mind.  Now I’ve found PLENTY of things to keep me busy.  Today I took care of Hudson in the morning, did laundry all day, went out to lunch with someone from church, went to Texas Department of Transportation, ate dinner with my family and hung out with my hubby all evening.  I love the idea of meal planning, cooking, cleaning, taking care of all the mundane things like car registration, coordinating workers for our home, and the list goes on and on.  I like being a stay at home wife which really makes me think I’ll love being a stay at home mom.  Until then I do need to find a job and I think that I MIGHT have found the perfect opportunity to do both work and staying home.  I was contacted tonight to interview for a Nanny position Tuesday-Thursday so I’d have Mondays and Fridays off and every weekend which is really what we were hoping for.  Prayers would be much appreciated because I’d like to have an income by April 1st when the mortgage starts!  I’ll keep you updated.
