What You’re Missing

February 28, 2011

If you aren’t friends with Andrew Campbell here are some things you are missing.

A True Intellect:  I love that my man is smart, like really smart, but more so than that, he loves information.  He knows a little something about a lot of things.  He knows what is going on in the news, the world and our city.  He is also fairly well read.

A Calm Presence:  You can be having the worst day or be totally frazzled and when he walks in the room you are quickly at peace.  He also knows when and how long to hug you when you are super tense.

A Man of God:  He loves God which is awesome, but the coolest thing about this is how he doesn’t shove it down people’s throat.  He respects people where they are and I’ve learned a lot from him in this area over the past 3 years.

Since moving here I have gained a new respect and a bigger love for my husband.  As I fell asleep last night I thought to myself…how lucky am I that I’m the one who gets to be with him?

Did You Miss Me?

February 25, 2011

Wow that visit with mom went WAY too fast!  It feels like she just got here and I put her on a plane this morning.  We got a lot done, but when she left I had the overwhelming realization that there is still so much that needs to be done!  How is it that I blinked and it was over?  Definitely looking forward to her coming when there isn’t as much work to do.  She finished my kitchen cabinets and can I just say they look incredible.  My kitchen has been totally transformed and we did it on a shoe string budget.  Against everyone’s recommendation I painted my counter tops and let me tell you they look MUCH better than they did.  Do they look like granite like the box says?  Well no, but I had no hope that they would, I just wanted them to look like new laminate and that’s exactly what they look like.  Alright so I’m killing you with talking about these things and not showing you pictures.  It pains me to show you anything when it isn’t done, but since you’ve waited patiently this long I’ll show you one before and after of the kitchen, just know that it’s not “decorated” yet and there will be a whole breakdown post later.

This is the only picture I have, sorry it's not a direct comparison

The cabinets look much more blue in the pictures than in person. The color is Federal Grey and there is a brownish glaze on them. I'll get better pictures soon!

Marathon Sunday

February 20, 2011

Today was Austin Marathon day and as usual my brothers were racing.  Kevin surprisingly did the half marathon and Bryan ran the full.  It was an early morning as I go up at 6:20 with Hudson and then we walked around everywhere to try to catch the boys as much as possible.  Kevin finished the half marathon 21st overall and 8th in his age group.  He came in ahead of the lead female runner and he actually beat Lance Armstrong which was kind of fun to see.  It was weird to see Lance in person (he looks much older).  I never got the official time on Bryan’s marathon, but hey he finished and I think that’s pretty great!  I’m exhausted, I am actually typing in bed, and I’ll probably take a little catnap.  Andrew is back at the house again.  He spends as much time as possible over there, but instead of getting burnt out I decided to stay home this evening.  I’m at a stand still with painting because I can’t make up my mind on the colors.  I got a little carried away with bold colors and now I’m not exactly sure how to tone them down, so I’m paralyzed a little bit when it comes to making more decisions.  Alrighty, I’m off to nap…I am tired from watching the marathon, I can’t imagine how the people that ran it feel!!!

3 Hours

February 18, 2011

In 3 hours my mom will be here.  I CAN’T WAIT to see her and to show her our new house.  This week we will work like beasts to try to get as much done as possible before we move in next Saturday.  We will be painting, SCRUBBING, meeting with drywallers, installing a garage door opener (Bryan and Andrew), look into the plumbing situations, sew curtains (mom), make a  headboard, and shop for some little chatchkis!  Also this weekend both of my brothers will be running the Austin Marathon, Bryan the full and Kevin the half.  We’ll be cheering them on Sunday morning and then heading back to the house to work some more.  SO this means when she leaves there will be pictures 🙂  I can’t wait to show you pictures!!  This also means I may not be blogging much this week so please excuse my absence!

February 16, 2011

That’s how I’m feeling right now about our house.  I’ve been spending my days there painting and planning the projects for when my mom comes on FRIDAY!!  I look around at this huge house (1800 square feet is rather large for us) and I think what 25 year old gets this cool of a house for their first place?  We’ve met some of the neighbors and they are all really nice.  They’ve started offering up stories about the last owners and let’s just say they were praying for the day when “normal” people moved in.  I can’t wait to show you pictures, but it’s not even close to ready yet.  I’m planning to do several posts and break down each room as we finish it.  I think the first room will be either the dining room or the piano room.  I’m really looking forward to my mom’s trip down and then 2 weeks later Stephanie will be here!  Visitors are starting to roll in and I can’t wait to host them at our new pad!  Feeling so blessed right now.

Thoughts on Change

February 11, 2011

I’ve been thinking a lot about change.  I’ve always been someone who thinks change is good, but I’m realizing I’m more resistant to change than I thought.  Here are some of the things that I’m not even kind of accustomed to in Austin yet.

1.  Grocery/drug stores.  I go in and panic, I can’t find anything I’m used to, the brands are different and the store set up totally throws me off!  I avoid these stores as much as possible.

2.  The bank.  We now bank with BofA which is really nice, but their ATMs are really high tech and they intimidate me so I just haven’t been to the bank without Bryan or Andrew since we moved here.  That’s bad considering I’ve been needing to go make a deposit, but I just am too “afraid” that I’m going to mess it up and the money isn’t going to go into our account.

3.  Car repair:  Andrew asked me to do ONE thing today and I didn’t do it because I’m not used to the new car places down here.  All he wanted me to do was get the lightbulbs changed in my car, but I couldn’t muster up the courage to go to a new car place and do it so I’m making him drop the car off with me tomorrow morning.  Pathetic, I know, but it’s just another place I’m not used to.

4.  Driving.  Yeah it takes 30 minutes to pretty much get anywhere from my Bro and S-I-L’s house, I’m getting used to that.  The drive is so pretty that it goes faster than it did in Illinois.  It’s the speed limits that are hard to adjust to.  The main roads we drive everyday are like 65 mph.  People however don’t drive 65, they drive between 50 and 55 it’s so weird!!

5.  Being a homeowner: now this is a change that is super positive.  I’m not complaining about this.  Believe me though, it will be a serious adjustment to pay utilities, repairs, a mortgage, homeowners insurance and the list goes on!  We closed on our house this morning and the work begins Sunday or Monday.  We’re excited, but I’m not sure we’re ready for the work that is about to ensue!  Can’t wait to show you some before and after pictures!

I am OBSESSED with the show Bones.  I hadn’t seen it until I moved here and didn’t have a job so I found this show on netflix and now I’m wrapped up in it.  This weekend I didn’t see a single episode and I actually felt like I missed them by the end of the weekend.  It feels like I’m moving so slow on this series considering it is currently in it’s eighth season and I’m just now today finishing season two.  In my “defense” each episode is 44 minutes long and there are 22 episodes a season.  I would love to be friends with these people they lead very interesting lives and they love their jobs.  Yeah I know it’s a show, but I like to believe people can love their jobs as much as they love theirs.  FYI if you watch an episode know that I totally understand that there is some terrible acting in the show, but I like the writing.

February 8, 2011

This weekend the weather was gorgeous!  I wish we had been a little more intentional about going outside.  Here’s the short and sweet summary of our weekend.

Friday:  SNOW DAY.  While Andrew worked all day in our room Amanda and I spent the day posting items on e-bay to try and sell some of her clothes.  If you want to check out the fruits of our labor click HERE.  Kevin came over and we bummed around the house all evening.  The boys stayed downstairs and sat by the fire and chatted while Amanda and I headed upstairs and watched the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy…the shooter episode.  Holy Cow it was insane and although Amanda had already seen it once she was just as on the edge of her seat as I was.  It was so intense that there were a couple points that I made her hold my hand.  If you haven’t seen it I suggest you watch it!

Saturday:  It warmed up and got super sunny.  Amanda and I ventured out to pick out a few pairs of shoes to replenish her closet from the purge.  Bryan and Andrew worked all day on putting up Wainscoting in the dining room. It is going to look quite fantastic and I’m hoping to put some up in our hearth room.  Bryan picked up some Chinese for us and we ate in and watched something…obviously it wasn’t very memorable.

Sunday:  Andrew and I went to church and then had a meeting to try to build the young adult community in our new church.  It was exciting to see people come together and toss around ideas about how to grow the church and in particular the young adult population.  We then came home and helped get ready for the super bowl party.  We had a fabulous time hanging out with their friends, gorging ourselves on food and watching the “game” read…commercials.

On Sunday I also found out that I have a job interview tomorrow (Wednesday) to do pretty much what I was doing back in Champaign.  Prayers would be appreciated, it’s at 10:45 🙂  I’ll let you know how it goes.

1. Do my hair regularly (getting better, especially since I don’t have a job and have more time)

2. Take a real vacation with Andrew…this means no family, not Mass, Texas, or Illinois. (the plans are in the process, I bought a killer dress the other day for this cruise.  It was a $258 and I paid $10 CHACHING!)

3.Watch 10 iconic movies: Gone with the Wind, Grapes of Wrath, A Hitchcock film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Beaches, 16 Candles, Fame, Casablanca, Meet Me in St. Louis, & Bonnie and Clyde. (I’ve got big plans to knock some of these out with Jenna in March)

4. Read Enneagram

5. Purchase a house

6. Go on a mini shopping spree (like spend a couple hundred dollars in one place)

7. Break a rule (not sure what, but this should be interesting) (I broke our budget rule for Christmas and surprised Andrew with a Keurig, I never break that rule)

8. Rebuild relationships that I have lost (Work in Progress)

9. Go an entire year only eating sweets once per week…this will be the hardest one I think (I’m doing pretty good, I took a couple weeks off for holidays, but besides Thanksgiving and Christmas I have really stuck to this)

10. Pay for someone’s meal anonymously that I don’t know, just because it’s nice

11.  Impact someone’s life in a positive way.

12.  Resurrect my fashion blog (working on it as we speak)

13. Host a themed dinner party

14. Take more pictures

15. Grow my hair out long again (It’s feeling pretty long, I’d say in the next couple months I’ll classify it as long.)

16. Catalog the clothes in my closet (if they weren’t packed right now I’d definitely be working on this)

17. Learn how to download songs from itunes and make playlists (Part of Jenna’s Christmas gift!)

18. Stop wearing glasses (could happen through miraculous healing, lasik, or finding contacts that work)

19.  Learn to ski, either water or snow

20. Don’t go to McDonalds for the entire year!  I think this will include Diet Coke. (had to cheat ONE TIME on our drive down here!  It’s where my brother stopped and I had oatmeal, I’d say I’m still totally on track with this one)

21.  Run a 5K.  (I plan to start training in February and looking for a 5K in April OR May)

22. Go away for the weekend with my mom (we didn’t get our trip this year and I missed it) (still hoping for this to happen!)

23. Keep a journal (even if it’s just online, write in it at least once per week, this blog doesn’t count) (I think I’m killing this one, haven’t started and I’ve been 25 for 4 month!)

24. Learn how to make some of my mom’s specialty recipes (starting with Mac and Cheese and Cinnamon Apple Jello) We did this before I moved…YUM!

25. Make a promise to myself and keep it, and don’t tell anyone (even Andrew) until I turn 26. (Still on track! and NO ONE KNOWS!)

Not EXACTLY Snowed In

February 2, 2011

So as I watch the news and talk to friends back in Illinois I am not envious of the amount of snow they are getting.  I wished for a snow day for my friends and family because nothing beats a snow day.  Light a fire, stay in your comfy clothes all day and stay inside guilt free.  When you CAN’T leave the house you don’t feel bad about taking a day and just staying inside.  Down here in Austin people are FREAKING OUT about the weather.  They use the term arctic air more than any city I’ve ever been in!  Everyday they talk about this threat of arctic air.  I just checked the weather it’s 25 degrees here with a wind chill of 15 degrees.  Bottom line, it’s cold here, I have absolutely no desire to leave the house and if it weren’t for this pesky student loan that needs to be mailed out today I wouldn’t be leaving the house.  Yep I’m pretty much considering this cold weather a snow day and I’m staying home in my comfy clothes and I’m not going to feel guilty about it!  Did I mention every coat I own is in storage because I was under the assumption that it’s TEXAS and it doesn’t get cold, I was wrong!  Oh also because it’s  “so cold” here they are doing rolling blackouts because the city is using so much energy to heat their homes so apparently at some point today we’ll be without power for 30-45 minutes, that’s a little strange to me…welcome to Austin I guess!
